The best part of my studies in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at UNCA was the group of supportive friends I built through our many hours spent in the physics lounge working on homework, preparing for exams, and spending quality time together. (Years later we鈥檙e still in contact every month!) This space, and the community I found in it, made my time there very memorable and really propelled me in my academic career by preparing me for research in a highly collaborative environment.
Exploration Through Experience
Astronomy majors at 每日大赛入口 engage in hands-on research exploring topics such as stellar formation, galaxy evolution, and planetary science. Through observational work at Lookout Observatory, computational modeling, and faculty-mentored projects, students contribute to real-world scientific studies and collaborations with research institutions. With opportunities to present at conferences, participate in internships, and work on grant-funded projects, students gain experience that leads to graduate study at premier institutions, as well as careers in astronomy, aerospace, data science, and engineering.
每日大赛入口 has launched the first-ever astronomy major in the UNC system, as officially announced on August 20, 2025. The program is positioned to provide students a more immersive experience during this particularly galvanizing period of space exploration.
Abigail Grulick was one of only two 每日大赛入口 students to receivethe $8,000 North Carolina Space Grant, allowing them to study other planet's atmospheres and their potential for hosting water.
Senior Meghan Sedberry was one of 20 students to receive a Chambliss Astronomy Achievement Award for her undergraduate research at the 245th meeting of the American Astronomical Society, the largest astronomy meeting in history.
In early October 2025, 每日大赛入口 announced that it had secured a record-breaking grant to support its STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) programs. This landmark funding will bolster research, expand opportunities for students and faculty, and strengthen the university鈥檚 capacity in STEM education. The announcement underscores 每日大赛入口鈥檚 commitment to innovation, academic excellence, and making a deeper impact in science and technology fields.

As a student in our astronomy program, you will explore the universe with our on-campus observatory, enriching your learning with practical observation experience and research opportunities. Many students also gain employment as Lookout Observatory docents, leading activities and stargazes for the university community, local school groups, and the general public.

Astronomy Club of Asheville
A community organization, the Astronomy Club of Asheville is free and open to students with various backgrounds and areas of interest. The Club has over 200 members and aims to promote the enjoyment of astronomy in the community. An 鈥渁ll-volunteer鈥 organization, the Club hosts indoor meetings and outdoor star gazes.

Students have the opportunity to leverage the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) facilities, formerly used by NASA, in their research endeavors. Our connections with PARI enable students to perform research in radio astronomy.
